The Type B-10 was a fabric flight jacket adopted by the U.S. Army Air Forces in July 1943 as a replacement for the leather B-6 jacket, designed for mid-temperature ranges (+10°C to -10°C). During WWII, facing a severe shortage of leather, the Army reviewed production methods and developed a flight jacket made of cotton twill, suitable for mass production. The lining used alpaca mohair wool pile, which was less bulky and lighter than sheepskin yet highly insulating. Although the exterior resembled the “AN” series, such as AN6552 or AN-J-3A, which were used jointly by the Army and Navy, the Army Air Forces did not fully adopt the “AN” series for joint use. Instead, the B-10 was adopted as a new fabric jacket for mid-temperature use.
