- The “Ishikawa-dai” is a Japanese-made ring spinning machine manufactured by Ishikawa Seisakusho Co., Ltd. in 1953. Although no records remain from the manufacturer, it is considered one of the oldest models still in operation in Japan. Compared to the latest ring spinning machines, its speed is very slow—about one-third as fast—and its productivity is not high. However, because it places less stress on the cotton, it preserves the material’s inherent soft and gentle texture, producing a natural character unique to cotton—one that cannot be replicated by computers—along with a hand-spun-like unevenness. For knitting, they use an old-style small-diameter circular knitting machine still in existence in Wakayama. While these knitting machines also do not offer high production efficiency, they are rare machines that symbolize the Japanese spirit of craftsmanship—responding to the desire to create fabric “slowly, carefully, and with a beautiful texture.” On these machines, the fabric is knitted in a tube shape from top to bottom, resulting in a “tubular” finish with no seams on the sides of the body. The fabric created in this way will be breathed new life as the next generation of vintage clothing.
